The key R35 section near Hradec Králové and Pardubice is in operation

27.11.2009 - Road projects

“The section between Sedlice and Opatovice has a key significance for the regional transport and long-distance transit transport alike. At the same time, we are clearly declaring our plan for constructing the R35 high-speed road leading along the entire length up to Olomouc. In the future, after having been completed, the R35 will markedly relieve the traffic load on the D1 motorway in the direction from Prague to Ostrava and vice versa,” says Alfred Brunclík, Chief Executive Officer of the ŘSD, adding that the R35 Sedlice – Opatovice road is becoming a crucial element of the transport system of the Czech Republic’s road and motorway network. It is part of the R35 high-speed road leading from Liberec through Hradec Králové and Vysoké Mýto to Olomouc, and further to the already connected D1 motorway to Ostrava.

"This is a truly historic moment for road engineers and the public alike, since these are the first kilometres of the R35 high-speed road in the entire East Bohemia. I would like us to link up to this crucial event as soon as possible and within an acceptable time begin driving on other sections of the R35," said Ivo Toman, assignee of the government for the line construction of the R35 high-speed road and the D11 motorway.

The opened Sedlice – Opatovice section of the R35 high-speed road and the construction of the I/37 Hrobice – Opatovice road bring benefits for several reasons. Firstly, the R35 Sedlice – Opatovice section connects the D11 Prague – Hradec Králové motorway with the I/37 Pardubice – Hradec Králové road, thus also becoming one of the feeder roads of Pardubice and Hradec Králové to the D11 motorway for regional and transit transport both to North Moravia and to Poland.

The construction of the R35 Sedlice – Opatovice road is mainly implemented on agricultural land near the municipalities of Libišany, Opatovice and Čeperka. Furthermore, it had to negotiate watercourses, a railway line, a tap line, the cultural-technical monument Opatovický kanál and forest and agricultural land. The implementation took place while the current roads were in operation, with only local traffic restrictions being applied. The construction also features a 20-metre-high scaffold bridge terminating at a roundabout above the I/37 road.

Part of the construction is also the mentioned four-lane section of the I/37 road between Hrobice and Opatovice, due to the implementation of the flyover of the R35 and I/37 roads, which must also allow for connection of the nearby municipalities of Opatovice and Čeperka.

In relation to the transport structures under preparation, when the I/37 road in the Pardubice – Hradec Králové section has a four-lane setup, the construction of the R35 high-speed road will be a significant benefit for the connection of the area to the high-capacity four-lane thoroughfares. The construction’s transport importance thus also increases when it comes to meeting the requirements for continuous growth of automobile transport.

“The crucial significance of the two constructions in relation to freight transport simply cannot be underestimated. To date, truck transport leading from Prague terminated at kilometre 68 of the D11 motorway and further continued on the old road to Hradec Králové. At the moment of placing the new section into operation, the truck transport on the D11 motorway and the R35 road will open along the entire length. As a result, traffic will not have a negative impact on the life in the towns and villages along the I/11 road and, at the same time, a smoother connection between Prague and the Hradec Králové and Pardubice Regions will open,” Alfred Brunclík says.

The project of construction of the R35 Sedlice – Opatovice section is co-financed by the European Union from the Cohesion Fund, within the Operational Programme Transport. Within Priority 2 in the “TEN-T Construction and Modernisation of the Motorway and Road Network” support area, it entails a contribution amounting up to 85 per cent of eligible costs.
