Road and Motorway Directorate of the Czech Republic welcomes rejection of the proposed change of territorial plan for Motorway D8 by local authorities of the Ústí nad Labem Region

09.03.2005 - Information service

The authorities supported with the decision the current variant of the construction from Lovosice to Řehlovice through České středohoří. The problematic part of this construction will be solved by a section in the form tunnel - bridge - tunnel, which is a cheaper, faster and probably also more environmentally suitable variant. Otherwise the result would be a further delay of the completion and a rise of expenses by more than 2, 000 million CZK. According to RMD CR, thanks to the decision of the regional representation it is possible to expect the completion of Motorway D8 at the end of 2008. "Today's decision of the regional representatives is very important. Pragmatic arguments have prevailed over a certain idea lacking realistic foundations. The important thing now is how the ecological organizations will act. They have the option of bringing different legal actions and trying to solve the whole case by legal proceedings. In such case it is impossible to set an exact date of completion of the motorway. We will try to keep the fixed date, i.e. the year 2008," said Petr Laušman, Managing Director of RMD CR.

On the length of 92 km, Motorway D8 will connect Prague, Ústí nad Labem and Germany where it will connect smoothly on German Motorway A17 which ends at the junction with Motorway A4 near Dresden. Construction of Section Ústí nad Labem - Germany through Krušné hory fully began in 2004. It should be completed around the end of 2006. 52 km of the motorway are already in operation, 23.5 km is under construction and 16.5 km in the preparatory phase.

The new fast connection of Prague and Northern Bohemia will provide a solution to the present traffic situation, which is continuously getting worse owing to the ever-growing amount of road haulage. The lorry traffic will be diverted from towns and villages around the D8 and the danger of serious road accidents will be limited, too. Completion of the motorway in time is undoubtedly a positive thing for the area concerned.

Construction of the motorway does not endanger or neglect the unique environment of the area. More than one thousand million CZK has been invested into environmental measures in České středohoří thanks to the construction of a new transport corridor. The uniqueness of the D8 in the area of environmental protection distinguishes it from all other roads in the Czech Republic. No other road in CR has more expensive bridges, protective earth embankments, bio-corridors for the safe passage of animals, noise barriers or biological recultivation with extensive forestation.
