The centre of Ostrava has a new feeder road to the motorway

Within the opening of the final section of the D1 motorway, linking Ostrava to the motorway network, on 25 November 2009 another two related thoroughfares are being placed into operation – the Northern Junction in Ostrava, and the bypass of the I/57 road in Hladké Životice. Thanks to the Northern Junction, the city of Ostrava is gaining a new crucial connection with the motorway in the direction of Brno.

The Northern Junction is part of the transport system of the city of Ostrava. It is a new road connection between the motorway and Mariánskohorská street that will serve to relieve traffic load on the overburdened Opavská street (road II/479), leading from the western part of Ostrava (Poruba, Martinov, Třebovice) to the city centre. “The route of the Northern Junction intersects the D1 motorway with a flyover, thus concurrently fulfilling the function of a motorway feeder road,” says Alfred Brunclík, Chief Executive Officer of the Road and Motorway Directorate of the Czech Republic (ŘSD).

During the drawing up of the project documentation, agreement with the city’s Poruba and Martinov districts was not reached in relation to the connection of the Northern Junction to Martinovská street. Since the construction of the D47 motorway and the flyover of the Northern Junction had already been under way for some time and connection of the motorway to the city’s road system was necessary, the construction of the Northern Junction was divided into two separate sections. Included in the first construction was the section from the boundary line of the Northern Junction flyover at the D47 motorway to the connection to the flyover. The flyover solution serves to slow down the traffic stream with a sufficient advance before entering the circus. The second construction, which will further lead west of the motorway, remains in the planning phase for the time being.

The construction measures 1.2 km, passes through broken ground and contains a 280-metre-long scaffold bridge across the river Odra, and a 350-metre-long scaffold bridge above the main railway track. Between the bridges, the route passes in the length of 223 metres on a high dike (8–12 metres). The construction also contains two noise barriers in the total length of 618 m.
