Newly expanded section of I/13 near Most now open

The Czech Road and Motorway Directorate (ŘSD) is opening additional key section of the I/13 between Chomutov and Most. The road is part of the international E442 corridor. The 1.7-km section between Komořany and Most underwent extensive reconstruction works, including expansion to a four-lane road. The main reason for construction was the growing burden placed on the road by intense truck traffic. Industry is the main motor of the local economy, necessitating the provision of the corresponding transport conditions.

The I/13 is the most important road connecting the Karlovy Vary, Ústí nad Labem, and Liberec regions. Its expansion to a four-lane road in the Ústí nad Labem region between Klášterec nad Ohří and Teplice was necessitated by the road’s high traffic burden, in particular through truck traffic. “The Komořany – Most project is the logical continuation of the reconstruction and modernization of the I/13, which connects important industrial centers in northern Bohemia, including the towns of Chomutov, Most, Teplice, and Ústí nad Labem,” explains the ŘSD’s director, Alfred Brunclík.

The highway has already been expanded to four lanes from Chomutov to Třebušice and from Most to Teplice. Two projects remain to be completed in the remaining section between Třebušice and Most. Besides the now operational section of the I/13 from Komořany to Most, there still remains an interchange in Třebušice, a key segment of which is just being built – a new bridge over the railway line and an interchange with the I/13 and II/255 highways

The road does not affect any protected areas with exhaust fumes or noise that would have to be addressed during construction. Construction was organized in such a manner as to avoid any significant traffic impacts on existing roads. The expansion of the existing two-lane road to four lanes will significantly contribute to increasing traffic safety and providing for a smooth traffic flow. The road’s expansion has eliminated two potential collision (accident-prone) points on at-grade connections. The better traffic flow also reduces negative impacts on the surroundings such as noise and exhaust.

The project has been co-financed by the European Union’s Cohesion Funds, in particular the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), as part of the Operational Programme Transport. The non-returnable European Union contribution was provided as part of Priority 4 in the area of “Modernization of Class I Roads Outside of TEN-T” up to 85% of qualified expenses.
