New section of R6 connects Cheb and Karlovy Vary
Today, the Czech Road and Motorway Directorate (ŘSD) is opening a new section of roadway as part of the construction of the R6 high-speed road between Tisová and Kamenný Dvůr. A 7.5-km section is being opened ahead of schedule. This left-hand half of the four-land road will carry one-way traffic from Cheb to Karlovy Vary. The road will be connected to a detour being opened at the same time because of the reconstruction of a bridge over the Ohře river being renovated as part of the “R6 Nové Sedlo – Sokolov” project. The project’s definitive completion date is June 2010.
The project replaces the existing two-lane I/6 highway with a new four-lane high-speed road. The “R6 Tisová – Kamenný dvůr” project runs south from Kynšperk nad Ohří and is part of a project for increasing road capacity between Cheb and Karlovy Vary (and by extension, between the German border and Prague).
The project links up with the section of high-speed road between Cheb and Kamenný Dvůr, extending it by 7,500 meters towards Karlovy Vary. The road runs parallel to the existing I/6 highway. “By widening the roadway, the Tisová – Kamenný Dvůr project will significantly increase traffic flow between Cheb and Karlovy Vary, contribute to greater safety for travelers on this route, and help to reduce the environmental impact on the surroundings,” says the ŘSD’s director, Alfred Brunclík.
In addition to the main road, the project also includes one interchange, alterations or relaying of existing roads, access roads to adjacent localities, and eight bridges or overpasses. The most technically challenging structures were five bridges on the main route, whose length totals roughly 1/4 of the entire route. The primary reason why such a large proportion of roadway is on bridges is the fact that the high-speed road passes immediately by the Slavkov Forest protected nature area. Construction of the high-speed road also involved rerouting existing class II and III roads.
The project also involves the construction of sound barriers and other work, including land recultivation. The negative environmental impacts of transport will be minimized by meeting the conclusions of the EIA documentation for the project, construction, and operations phases. The impacted forest growth will be replaced by tree planting.
The project has been recommended for European Union co-financing from the Cohesion Fund as part of the Operational Programme Transport. An application has been filed for a non-returnable European Union contribution as part of Priority 2 in the area of “Construction and Modernization of the TEN-T Motorway and Road Network.”
