Main route along the Elbe River in Ústí nad Labem widened

In Ústí nad Labem, one of the most complicated transportation hubs in the city has been rebuilt. The location of the new construction is on the I/30 road between Pražská and Přístavní streets. The area, which used to be flooded regularly several times a year, has been rebuilt to stand a level of a five-year flood. The construction, which began at spring 2009, has been now put into operation by The Road and Motorway Directorate of the Czech Republic (ŘSD).

The construction lies on the transit section of the I/30 between Pražská and Přístavní streets,which not only links the city of Prague, Lovosice, Ústí nad Labem and Děčín, but forms one of the most important roads of the Ústí nad Labem communication system.


„The importance of the reopened communication will remain the same even after the construction of the D8 motorway. The river bank communication Pobřežní – Pražská is, under the Edvard Beneš bridge, currently a transit section of the I/30 road through Ústí nad Labem, which links to the I/62 road Ústí nad Labem- Děčín,“ the Road and Motorway Directorate CEO Jiří Švorc explains the key benefits of the construction.

The main objective of the project was to improve the passability and strengthen the transport capacity in Přístavní street by making four lanes, removal of inadequate underpass height, which was, in the Děčín- Prague direction only 3.7meters. That meant higher vehicles had to use an independent, two-way lane which ran close by the river, with an underpass height of 5.1 meters. Higher vehicles in the direction Děčín -Prague had to cross twice an opposite direction traffic flow. During the rush hour, the above mentioned maneuver was difficult to realize, because the adjacent traffic lights generated a tailback and the traffic intensity generated small gaps between vehicles for the necessary maneuver to be performed.


The newly commissioned section of a road has also dealt with heavy traffic in the center of the city. Due to a reduction in the vertical alignment of the road at the steamers harbor and Edvard Beneš bridge, the area, including a ford, has been flooded in average twice a year. All the transport then had to be carried by detours through the city. „ That created some very serious traffic conflicts,“ says Jiří Švorc.

The construction also addresses safe movement of pedestrians between the Malá Hradební street, passenger boat dock, Edvard Beneš bridge, Marian embankment at the bridge, including a safe passage under the railway bridge „U pěti oblouků“ between Přístavní and Předmostí streets. The commissioning of the new section has enabled smooth movement of large vehicles (especially trolleys) turning to the right from the Přístavní street to the Předmostí street.
