D1 links Prague with Kroměříž
Today, the Czech Road and Motorway Directorate will open a new section of the D1 Motorway, the Mořice – Kojetín, phase II section. This 6.6-km stretch of motorway connects a segment near Kroměříž already in operation with the motorway from Prague in order to give the motorway a total length of 261 km. In subsequent years, the project’s strategic importance will become increasingly apparent with the opening of new segments to Zlín and Ostrava. Construction of this segment will significantly improve transport connections along the TEN-T network’s Trans-European transport corridor no. 6.
The newly opened section connects with a previous section of the D1 from Vyškov to Mořice and with the “Mořice – Kojetín phase I” project, prior to the motorway’s provisional connection to the I/47 highway at Vrchoslavice. To the east, the new road connects with the Kojetín – Kroměříž-west section, which has been in operation since August 2008.
“Construction of these segments will greatly calm traffic on the original I/47 highway and in surrounding communities,” explains the ŘSD’s director, Alfred Brunclík. Phase II also includes the technical and biological recultivation of the temporary connector with the D1 at Vrchoslavice, which was built as part of phase I in order to connect the D1 with the existing road network, specifically the I/47 highway between Vrchoslavice and Stříbrnice.
The new road passes outside of built-up areas, primarily on agricultural land. Nevertheless, the route required numerous relays of utility lines and watercourses. The motorway’s surface shape in the sections in question was designed with a view towards the extent of earthmoving work and the composition of the geological subsurface. Extensive redevelopment measures around bridges included pylons and redevelopment layers below the embankments. The project also includes an interchange at Kojetín and 14 bridges (three over watercourses). A rest area is planned on both sides of the motorway near Křenovice.
The construction of the Mořice – Kojetín – Kroměříž east section of the D1 motorway, which includes the newly opened section, was co-financed by the European Union’s Cohesion Fund, which provides financing for infrastructure development in the areas of transport and the environment. The EU funding, provided by a European Commission decision in the form of a non-returnable contribution in the amount of EUR 74,566,720 (ca. CZK 2,312 million), represents 62% of recognized project costs. The Czech government’s share was provided by the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure.
