Construction of a 25 kilometre section of the D3 Southern Bohemian highway commenced

The Road and Motorway Directorate of the Czech Republic is starting the construction of a major set of projects as part of the D3 highway with a total length of 25 kilometres from Tábor to Veselí nad Lužnicí today. The section will make travelling to České Budějovice easier and, more importantly, route transit traffic outside of Tábor, Planá n.L. and Soběslav.

"The absence of the highway in Southern Bohemia is so serious that it needs to be built in large sections in order to withdraw as much traffic as possible from the heavily overloaded I/3 road as soon as possible," says RMD CEO Alfred Brunclík. The positive influence on road traffic safety will be a major benefit of the new section. The current Road I/3, which currently handles traffic via České Budějovice, is considered to be one of the worst in terms of traffic loading. The traffic intensity parameters obtained during the regular national traffic census in 2005 indicate that the existing I/3 between Mirošovice and Benešov has insufficient capacity for traffic these days. The daily traffic intensity in this section exceeded 24,000 vehicles per day in either direction in 2005.

The commenced D3 section from Tábor to Veselí nad Lužnicí includes a bridge over the Koberný Pond (575 m), Černovický Stream (765 m), and River Lužnice (1,063 m). The project includes the reconstruction of the Tábor bypass road dating back to 1991, to which the new section will be linked. Thus, a compact 40 km section of the Southern Bohemian motorway will be built by 2011.

Once completed, the D3 motorway will become part of the European transit corridor network, specifically the E55 international road, which leads from Scandinavia to Greece through Germany, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Italy.

The D3 will also function as a high-capacity connection between Prague and the south of Bohemia, and it will connect the Tábor and České Budějovice areas with the national highway and motorway network and, in a south direction, to the road and motorway network in Austria. The overall length of the D3 highway and the related R3 motorway between Prague and the Austrian border is approximately 171.40 km. Today, only a 15 km section near Tábor is in existence.
