The motorway network has doubled in size since 1989
A huge amount of transport infrastructure construction in the Czech Republic has been completed, and at least as much lies ahead. Since 1989, the motorway and high-speed-road network has increased from 544 kilometres to the current 1,056. The construction activity has recorded the greatest dynamism over the last two years, when 136 kilometres of motorways and high-speed roads were put into operation.
According to transport infrastructure experts, the motorway and high-speed-road network in the Czech Republic will be complete once the level of 2,100 kilometres has been attained. The most significant projects that have yet to be completed include, for example, the D47 North Moravia motorway (which after its completion will become part of the D1 motorway), the D3 motorway in the direction of Austria, the Prague Ring Road, and the D8 motorway north to the German border. "High-speed roads are crucially important too; for example, the R35 (Hradec Králové - Olomouc), the R6 to Karlovy Vary, the R7 to Chomutov, and others," said Alfred Brunclík, Chief Executive Officer of the Road and Motorway Directorate of the Czech Republic (ŘSD).
When it comes to transport infrastructure, the Czech Republic has done the maximum possible in recent years. In 2008, for instance, the construction of 13 sections in the total length of 106 kilometres commenced. It concerned the following constructions:
Road | Section | Date of opening | Region | Length |
D1 | Bohumín - státní hranice | 8.4.2008 | T | 6,1 |
D1 | Kroměříž - východ - Říkovice | 12.6.2008 | Z | 11,3 |
D3 | Tábor - Veselí nad Lužnicí | 2.10.2008 | C | 25,0 |
R1 | Vestec - D1 | 10/2008 | S | 8,8 |
R4 | Mirotice - Třebkov | 22.4.2008 | C | 6,0 |
R6 | Jenišov - Nové Sedlo | 19.2.2008 | K | 4,4 |
R6 | Sokolov - Tisová | 8.10.2008 | K | 5,4 |
R7 | MUK Vysočany | 11.4.2008 | U | 0,5 |
R7 | Vysočany - Bítozeves | 11.4.2008 | U | 5,8 |
R7 | Sulec obchvat | 9.6.2008 | U | 2,5 |
R49 | Hulín - Fryšták | 30.10.2008 | Z | 17,3 |
R55 | D1 - Hulín | 12.6.2008 | Z | 2,5 |
R55 | Skalka - Hulín | 2.7.2008 | Z | 10,8 |
In general, the past three years have ranked amongst the most dynamic periods. Between 2006 and 2008, 136 kilometres of motorways and high-speed roads were placed into operation in the Czech Republic. In 2008 alone, the following sections were launched:
Road | Section | Date of opening | Region | Length |
D 1 | Bílovec - Ostrava Rudná | 6.5.2008 | T | 11,7 |
D 1 | Kojetín - Kroměříž východ | 23.9.2008 | Z | 7,0 |
D 1 | Lipník nad Bečvou - Bělotín | 25.11.2008 | M | 15,4 |
R 6 | Praha - Pavlov | 19.12.2008 | S | 10,4 |
R48 | D1 - Bělotín | 25.11.2008 | M | 2,4 |
The ŘSD intends to continue in this dynamic trend over the next few years too. For the time being, the opening of 53 kilometres of new thoroughfares of the motorway type is planned for 2009. It concerns a total of seven sections:
Road | Section | Region | Length |
D1 | Mořice - Kojetín 2. etapa | M | 6,6 |
D1 | Bělotín - Hladké Životice | T | 18,1 |
D1 | Hladké Životice - Bílovec | T | 11,7 |
R6 | Tisová - Kamenný Dvůr | K | 7,5 |
R7 | MÚK Vysočany | U | 0,5 |
R7 | Bítozeves - Vysočany | U | 5,8 |
R35 | Sedlice - Opatovice | E | 3,0 |
Motorway network - status as at 1.1.1990 |
Motorway network - status as at 1.1.2009 |
